During the festive season, you will find that a lot more cooking is done and your dishwasher may take in heavier loads than usual. However, there are some things you should not put in there. One thing is washing up liquid, due to the build-up of foam and bubbles you’d get. Sharp kitchen knives shouldn’t be put in there as they can get blunt. Any cutlery that is gold coloured may lose their colour if they are washed in there. You shouldn’t put anything made of wood in the dishwasher, due to wood expanding from the water. If you put cutting boards or other wooden utensils in there, the wood can lose natural oils, potentially splitting and drying out.
Non-stick pans can lose their coating after a while, coming off when you are cooking. They will usually say if they are dishwasher safe on the bottom of the pan. Another pan you must take care with, is a cast iron pan. These need oil to work properly, so if they are washed in the dishwasher, their oil may be stripped away. If you have a copper pan, the shine can eventually disappear. If you have anything that is insulated (like a thermos mug) it can get damaged from the higher temperatures. You should also not put any precious or antique items in the dishwasher. These should be washed by hand, to ensure you do not damage them.
When in doubt, you should wash your possessions by hand, no matter how tempting it is to just pop it in the dishwasher. It is safer then potentially ruining both the item and the dishwasher itself, call us for a free quote on your Dishwasher repair in Plymstock.
